AI is everywhere right now. Your Facebook feed, the news, your group chats — someone is always posting about a new tool that does something that used to take hours. And a lot of it is real. Not all hype.

But if you're a small business owner, the part that probably caught your attention is this: "You can build a website with AI now. Can you?"

Maybe you've seen it. Maybe you've even tried one of those tools. And maybe you're here because you're still not sure whether that's actually true — or whether there's a catch.

There is. But there's also genuinely useful stuff worth knowing. So let me break both down honestly.

What AI is genuinely good at — use these now

Before we get to the limitations, let's be clear: these tools are real and they work.

Writing your captions and product descriptions

This is where AI earns its keep. If you're spending 20 minutes staring at a blank screen trying to write a Facebook post, stop. Open ChatGPT, describe your product, and ask it to write three caption options. Pick the one that sounds most like you and post it. Done in 3 minutes.

Customer reply templates

Got a question you answer the same way fifty times a month? "Is it available in XL?" "How long does delivery take?" "Do you accept GCash?" Draft a set of template replies with AI, save them somewhere, and paste when needed. It's not glamorous but it saves real time.

Canva for visuals

Canva's AI tools are good enough now that a non-designer can produce clean social media graphics, price cards, and product banners without hiring anyone. It's not perfect, but it's more than good enough for everyday posts.

Brainstorming

Stuck on what to name a promo? Not sure how to respond to a difficult customer complaint? Need ideas for your next sale? AI is a thinking partner that doesn't get tired and doesn't charge by the hour. Use it like a sounding board.

Where it runs out of road

Now here's where it gets honest.

It doesn't know what GCash is

More precisely: none of the major AI website builders — Wix AI, Squarespace, any of them — have native GCash or Maya support. Zero. If a Filipino seller tries to build a store using an AI website builder and wants to accept GCash properly, they hit a wall almost immediately.

The workaround is to use a third-party payment gateway like PayMongo, which bridges the gap. But that's not something an AI builder does for you automatically. It requires actual setup — API keys, webhook configuration, test transactions, error handling. That's developer work.

COD is the same story. Still the most preferred payment method for buyers outside Metro Manila — but AI builders have no concept of COD workflows. Confirming orders manually, marking as paid on delivery, handling failed deliveries. That's a process that has to be built into the store logic by someone who understands it.

It generates insecure code

This one surprises people. A 2025 study found that 40% of AI-generated code contains at least one critical security vulnerability. Not minor issues — critical ones. If you use an AI tool to generate your website and you don't have someone who knows what they're looking at reviewing the output, you may be running a site with holes in it that you can't see.

It builds generic sites

Because AI website builders learn from patterns — thousands of existing sites — the output tends to look like every other AI-built site. Same layout rhythms, same section structures, same feel. Clients have started recognizing AI-built sites the same way readers recognize ChatGPT writing — there's a texture to it. For a business trying to stand out, that's a real problem.

It can't make strategic decisions for your business

AI doesn't know that your buyers are mostly moms in Metro Manila who shop on their phones at 10pm. It doesn't know that your best-selling product needs to be front and center, or that your return policy needs to be visible on the checkout page because your niche gets a lot of skeptical first-time buyers. It generates a website based on general patterns. You — and someone who asks the right questions — turn that into something that actually converts.

The honest model

Here's what actually happens when you try to build a website using AI.

You don't just type "build me an online store for shoes and bags" and get a working store. That's not how it goes. What you get is a starting point — a page, a layout, some placeholder content. Then the real work begins.

None of those questions answer themselves. Someone has to test every flow, catch every gap, and know what a working system is supposed to look like before they can say it's done.

I've started using AI in my own workflow and it genuinely helps — it speeds up the parts that used to take hours. But the reason it speeds things up for me is because I already know what I'm building toward. I know what questions to ask, what to prompt for, what to throw away, and what to keep. I can write a detailed enough brief to get something close to useful on the first pass — but that only works because I understand the system behind it.

For someone without that background, AI doesn't simplify the job. It just moves the complexity somewhere less visible.

And that's before we even talk about deployment. The website has to live somewhere — a server that needs to be configured, secured, and maintained. A domain that needs to point to the right place. An SSL certificate so the browser doesn't show a security warning that scares customers away. A database that needs to be set up correctly so orders don't get lost. I test everything on a local environment first before it ever goes near a live server — catching problems before real customers do.

AI doesn't provision a server. It doesn't configure Apache or set up a database. It doesn't know that your hosting is in the Philippines and latency matters. That part of the job exists entirely outside of what any AI tool touches — and it's the part that determines whether your store actually works when someone tries to buy something at 9pm on a Saturday.

When it actually matters

GCash checkouts break. Hosting goes down. A plugin update wipes a product page. When that happens on a payday weekend — the busiest time for Filipino online sellers — the fix isn't a prompt you type into ChatGPT. It's someone who knows the setup, knows the server, and can trace the problem fast.

AI helps you show up consistently. A proper setup means you don't disappear when it matters most.
