Here's what's interesting about that claim: almost every person saying it is also selling you something. A course. A template. A subscription tool. The message is designed to make you feel like hiring a developer is a waste of money — so you buy their product instead.
So let's talk about what's actually true.
What AI can genuinely do
AI tools have made building websites faster. That's real. A developer using AI today can do in a few hours what used to take days. That's good for you — it means lower cost and faster delivery.
AI can also help you write content, generate design ideas, and suggest fixes for simple problems. We covered the practical tools in last week's post — and those are genuinely useful for business owners.
But there's a gap between "AI helps" and "AI replaces."
What actually happens when business owners try to DIY
It takes much longer than expected
AI gives you a starting point, not a finished product. A business owner who doesn't know HTML, hosting, domains, or databases will spend days — sometimes weeks — getting something that barely works. That's time away from actually running your business.
Security is invisible until something breaks
AI won't tell you your contact form is exposed to spam bots. It won't warn you that your hosting is misconfigured, that your SSL certificate expired, or that someone is scraping your customer data. A developer thinks about these things before they become problems.
It looks fine on your screen, broken on everyone else's
AI-generated websites often look good on the device you tested on. Then a customer opens it on their phone and the menu doesn't work, the text overflows, the checkout button is hidden. Testing across devices and browsers is a skill, not a feature.
When something breaks, you're on your own

What AI actually changed
AI made developers faster and more affordable — not unnecessary. The developer who used to charge ₱50,000 for a 3-month project can now deliver the same quality in 3 weeks. That's the real benefit for business owners.
AI lowered the cost of building. It didn't lower the cost of knowing what you're building, why it matters, and how to keep it running.
The judgment, the experience, the ability to ask the right questions about your business and translate that into something that actually works online — that's still human work. AI is a tool in those hands, not a replacement for them.
The honest comparison
A carpenter with a nail gun is faster than one without. That doesn't mean you should buy a nail gun and build your own house. You'd still hire the carpenter — now they just finish faster.
Same principle. Use AI for what it's good at: writing your captions, drafting your product descriptions, generating ideas. Let your developer use it too — so your project costs less and ships faster. That's the right division of work.
What this means for you
